Psalms 37

Security of Those Who Trust in the Lord, and Insecurity of the Wicked.

A Psalm of David.

1 ^aDo not get upset because of evildoers,
Do not be ^benvious of wrongdoers.
2 For they will ^cwither quickly like the grass,
And ^ddecay like the green plants.
3 ^eTrust in the Lord and do good;
^fLive in the land and ^{▼▼Or feed securely; or feed on His faithfulness
,} ^hcultivate faithfulness.
4 ⁱDelight yourself in the Lord;
And He will ^jgive you the desires of your heart.
5 ^kCommit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
6 He will bring out ^lyour righteousness as the light,
And your judgment ^mas the noonday.

7 ^{▼▼Or Be still}Rest in the Lord and ^owait ^{▼▼Or longingly}patiently for Him;
^qDo not get upset because of one who is ^rsuccessful in his way,
Because of the person who carries out wicked schemes.
8 Cease from anger and ^sabandon wrath;
Do not get upset; it leads only to evildoing.
9 For ^tevildoers will be eliminated,
But those who wait for the Lord, they will ^uinherit the land.
10 Yet ^va little while and the wicked person will be no more;
And you will look carefully for ^whis place and he will not be there.
11 But ^xthe humble will inherit the land
And will delight themselves in ^yabundant prosperity.

12 The wicked ^zplots against the righteous,
And ^aagnashes at him with his teeth.
13 The Lord ^ablaughs at him,
For He sees that ^achis day is coming.
14 The wicked have drawn the sword and ^adbent their bow
To take down the ^aeafflicted and the needy,
To ^afkill off those who are upright in conduct.
15 Their sword will enter their own heart,
And their ^agbows will be broken.

16 ^ahBetter is the little of the righteous
Than the abundance of many wicked.
17 For the ^aiarms of the wicked will be broken,
But the Lord ^ajsustains the righteous.
18 The Lord ^akknows the days of the ^{▼▼Lit complete; or perfect}blameless,
And their ^aminheritance will be forever.
19 They will not be ashamed in the time of evil,
And ^anin the days of famine they will have plenty.
20 But the ^aowicked will perish;
And the enemies of the Lord will be like the ^{▼▼I.e., flowers}glory of the pastures,
They vanish-- ^aqlike smoke they vanish away.
21 The wicked borrows and does not pay back,
But the righteous ^aris gracious and gives.
22 For ^asthose blessed by Him will ^atinherit the land,
But those ^aucursed by Him will be eliminated.

23 ^avThe steps of a man are established by the Lord,
And He ^awdelights in his way.
24 When ^axhe falls, he will not be hurled down,
Because ^aythe Lord is the One ^{▼▼Or who sustains him with His hand}who holds his hand.
25 I have been young and now I am old,
Yet ^baI have not seen the righteous forsaken
Or ^bbhis ^{▼▼Lit seed}descendants begging for bread.
26 All day long ^bdhe is gracious and lends,
And ^behis ^{▼▼Lit seed}descendants are a blessing.

27 ^bgTurn from evil and do good,
So that you will dwell ^bhforever.
28 For the Lord ^biloves ^{▼▼Lit judgment}justice
And ^bkdoes not abandon His godly ones;
They are ^blprotected forever,
But the ^{▼▼Lit seed
,} ^bndescendants of the wicked will be eliminated.
29 The righteous will ^boinherit the land
And ^bpdwell in it forever.
30 The mouth of the righteous ^bqutters wisdom,
And his tongue ^brspeaks justice.
31 The ^bsLaw of his God is in his heart;
His ^btsteps do not slip.
32 The ^buwicked spies upon the righteous
And ^bvseeks to kill him.
33 The Lord will ^bwnot leave him in his hand
Or ^bxlet him be condemned when he is judged.
34 ^byWait for the Lord and keep His way,
And He will exalt you to inherit the land;
When the ^bzwicked are eliminated, you will see it.

35 I have ^caseen a wicked, violent person
Spreading himself like a ^cbluxuriant ^{▼▼Lit native; Heb obscure}tree in its native soil.
36 Then he passed away, and behold, he ^cdwas no more;
I searched for him, but he could not be found.
37 Observe the ^{▼▼Lit complete; or perfect
,} ^cfblameless person, and look at the ^cgupright;
For the person of peace will have ^cha future.
38 But wrongdoers will altogether be ^cidestroyed;
The future of the wicked will be ^cjeliminated.
39 But the ^cksalvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
He is their strength ^clin time of trouble.
40 ^cmThe Lord helps them and rescues them;
He ^cnrescues them from the wicked and saves them,
Because they ^cotake refuge in Him.
